Why LLM applications need their own operations layer
A language-model feature has behavior that cannot be read from the code. The same prompt can respond differently after a provider updates its model, a retrieval index changes, or users start asking new things. Unit tests alone cannot tell you whether the assistant became less accurate, more verbose, more expensive or easier to trick. The result is a feedback loop where production behavior improves tests, and tests protect production.
LLMOps adds the missing instruments. It combines versioned prompts and datasets, repeatable evaluations, production tracing, cost and latency tracking, and safety testing, tied into the delivery pipeline. The goal is ordinary engineering confidence: you know what changed, what it affected and how to undo it. Consent and privacy rules decide which real traffic can enter the test set, and sensitive fields are masked first.
