About IT Staff Augmentation
How IT Staff Augmentation works in practice
IT staff augmentation lets you add vetted engineers to your existing team when hiring locally is too slow or too narrow. This page covers when augmentation works better than a managed team, how Speqto screens and onboards people, and what you should check before committing, aimed at engineering managers with a clear gap to fill.
When adding individuals is the better move
Staff augmentation fits when you already have engineering management, a codebase and a process, and what you lack is capacity or one specific skill. Examples include a Kubernetes engineer for a migration, two extra React developers before a launch, or a QA automation specialist your team never had time to hire. Be honest internally about whether you can supply that direction, because augmentation transfers capacity, not leadership, and the engineers will only be as productive as the context they receive.
The engineers work under your direction, in your tools, using your standups and ticket system. You carry coordination, which gives you control but also responsibility. If your managers are already stretched, or if you want a group accountable for outcomes, a dedicated team or product pod will serve you better than individual placements. It is also easy to start and end for short, bounded needs.
How we vet and place engineers
We start from a written profile of the role: stack, seniority, domain exposure, time-zone overlap and how independently the person must work. Candidates go through a technical review of past code, a live problem-solving session and a communication check, because an excellent engineer who cannot explain a blocker costs more than a good one who can. We also ask about the working style your team has, since pairing-heavy cultures and asynchronous ones need different people.
Profiles reach you within about two business days of a clear brief. You interview the shortlist and decide. Before day one we agree on access, a first-week plan and one named contact at Speqto who handles leave, performance concerns or replacement, so you are not managing employment matters yourself. If a candidate is not right after a trial period, we replace them without making you restart the search from the beginning, and the handover of any work in progress is on us.
Making augmented engineers effective
Most failed placements come from poor onboarding, not poor engineers. Give new people a working local environment in the first day, a small real task in the first week and a buddy for code review. Include them in standups and design discussions rather than treating them as a ticket queue. Treat the first two weeks as part of the engagement cost, and review progress together at the end of them instead of waiting for a problem to appear.
Keep contracts simple: monthly engagement, 30 days notice to scale up or down, full IP assignment and an NDA on request. Review fit after the first month. Where AI coding assistants are used, we agree the rules with you, including which repositories may be shared with which tools, before any code is touched. A short written summary keeps both sides honest about expectations and missing skills.
What is included
What you get from the first week
Role-based talent matching
We translate your stack and seniority needs into a short list of engineers whose recent work matches the problem you are solving.
Technical screening
Every candidate goes through code review, a live exercise and a communication check before their profile is shared with you.
Onboarding support
We agree access, tooling and a first-week plan in advance, so the new engineer contributes real code quickly.
Time-zone alignment
Working hours are arranged for overlap with your team, with agreed windows for standups, reviews and urgent discussions.
Replacement and backfill
If a placement is not working or someone leaves, we propose a replacement and manage the knowledge handover.
Monthly engagement management
One Speqto contact handles contracts, leave, equipment and performance conversations, leaving you free to manage the engineering work itself day to day.
How it runs
A typical engagement, step by step
Pick a stage to see what happens. Timings are typical, not promises.
Days 1-2
Share the brief
Roles, stack, hours overlap and how long you need people. A 20-minute call is usually enough.
Days 2-5
Meet matched profiles
You receive vetted profiles with assessment notes and interview the engineers yourself.
Week 1-2
Onboard into your tools
Access, repositories, stand-ups and a first-sprint plan agreed with a named delivery lead.
Every week
Deliver and demo
Working software each week, reports on progress and risks, and direct access to every engineer.
Monthly
Review and adjust
Add or release engineers with 30 days notice as the roadmap changes.

Lower hiring risk
Month-to-month terms and replacement support mean a poor match is corrected quickly instead of becoming a permanent cost.
Working rhythm
How you stay in control
Daily stand-up
Short check-in that overlaps with your hours.

FAQ
IT Staff Augmentation FAQs
Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.
We share matched profiles within about two business days of a clear brief. After interviews and access setup, many engineers begin within a couple of weeks. Rare skills or a long notice period on the candidate's side can extend this, and we say so up front.
Who manages augmented engineers?
You do. They join your standups, follow your tickets and report to your lead. Speqto handles employment, leave, equipment and performance conversations. If you want us to manage delivery as well, a dedicated team is a better fit.
How do we protect our source code and data?
Work happens in your repositories and environments, with least-privilege access that is removed on exit. We sign an NDA on request, and the contract assigns all IP to you. We also agree rules for using AI assistants on your code.
Can we convert augmented engineers into our own staff?
This depends on the agreement, and it is something to discuss at the start. Build-operate-transfer is designed for it: we build and run a team, then transfer it to your own legal entity once you are ready.
