Video-on-Demand Development

Speqto builds video-on-demand platforms for studios, learning providers, regional broadcasters and membership businesses. This page covers ingest and transcoding workflows, catalog and metadata design, discovery, and the cost levers that matter once your library grows from hundreds of titles to tens of thousands.

Treat the library as a data problem

A VOD service lives or dies on its catalog. Titles, seasons, episodes, cast, languages, ratings, availability windows and territory rights all need a clean model. Messy metadata produces broken browse pages, duplicate entries and rights violations. Rights are the part many teams underestimate. Windows that open and close, territory restrictions, and license terms that differ per title all need to drive what a viewer in each country can browse and play.

We design the catalog schema with editorial staff, then build ingestion paths from partner feeds such as MRSS, EIDR-keyed sources or spreadsheets. Validation catches missing artwork or subtitles before a title goes live, which is cheaper than finding out after viewers complain. Quality control is automated where possible. Checks for black frames, loudness, resolution and audio language mapping catch problems that would otherwise be found by viewers weeks later.

Transcoding workflows that scale with the library

Each uploaded master becomes a ladder of renditions, thumbnails, trick-play sprites and caption files. Jobs run through a queue with retries, using FFmpeg workers on autoscaled compute or a managed encoder. Priority lanes let a new release jump ahead of back-catalog re-encodes. Metadata governance also saves money. Standard identifiers, controlled vocabularies for genres and languages, and a single owner for each field prevent the drift that makes search and reporting unreliable over time.

Storage tiering matters. Hot content sits in standard object storage, cold titles move to cheaper classes, and masters are archived. Re-encoding an entire library for a new codec such as HEVC or AV1 is a project to budget deliberately, not a casual upgrade. Archiving strategy should be decided at the start. Keeping original masters in cold storage allows a future re-encode, while keeping only delivery files makes later quality upgrades impossible.

Discovery that earns watch time

Search needs typo tolerance, multilingual matching and filters, typically with OpenSearch or Algolia. Recommendations start simply, with trending, recently watched and similar-title rails, and grow into collaborative filtering or embedding-based models once there is enough viewing data. Cold start is the usual obstacle for personalized rails. New titles and new viewers have no history, so blend content-based similarity, editorial picks and popularity to avoid empty or repetitive rows.

AI also speeds up editorial work: automatic tagging, synopsis drafts, thumbnail selection and subtitle generation can cut manual effort, provided editors review the output. We avoid personalization that traps viewers in a narrow loop, because catalog breadth is part of the product. Measure what recommendations change. We set up experiments on click-through, completion and abandonment instead of trusting a model because it is sophisticated, and we monitor for rows that over-promote a few titles.

What we do

What our Video-on-Demand Development team delivers

Specific work we do for clients, with the senior people who do it.

  • VOD platform build

Catalog, playback, user accounts and admin tools designed around your content types and rights model. Role-based admin tools let editorial, legal and operations teams share one system.

  • Metadata and CMS

Flexible content models, scheduling windows, territory rules and bulk import from partner feeds. Titles are scheduled, expired and restricted by territory, with previews for editors.

  • Transcoding automation

Queue-based pipelines with retries, priority lanes, thumbnails, sprites and subtitle processing. Jobs carry priority, report progress, and write results back to the catalog automatically when processing completes.

  • Search and recommendations

Typo-tolerant search, rails and personalized suggestions based on viewing signals. Rails for continue watching, because you watched, trending and new arrivals can be configured by editors.

  • Library migration

Move content from an old platform or storage account with checksum verification and redirect planning. A staged cutover keeps search traffic and logged-in users intact.

  • Cost and storage tuning

Tiering, codec choices and CDN cache strategy to keep unit costs steady as the library grows. Reports show which titles drive cost against actual viewing.

Outcomes

What you can expect

Every engagement is tied to measurable business results, not just deliverables.

01

Findable content

Viewers reach the right title in a few taps, which improves catalog utilization and retention. Editors spend less time on data entry.

02

Predictable operations

Automated ingest and encoding that editorial teams can run without engineering tickets. Library growth does not mean cost surprises.

03

Lower cost per hour watched

Storage and delivery tuned so growth in library size does not produce runaway bills. Costs stay steady per hour watched.

FAQ

Video-on-Demand Development FAQs

Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.

What is video-on-demand development?

It is building the systems that store, encode, protect, catalog and deliver pre-recorded video that viewers watch whenever they choose. That includes ingest, transcoding, metadata, playback apps, search, billing and analytics around the library. It usually also involves rights management, subscriber access rules, search, analytics and the editorial tools used to publish titles.

How do we migrate a VOD library to a new platform?

Inventory assets and metadata, transcode or repackage as needed, verify with checksums, run both systems in parallel and redirect URLs. Viewing history and entitlements should migrate too, or customers will notice. We prepare a mapping document and a rollback path, then verify a sample set of titles before moving the whole catalog.

Is AV1 worth adopting for VOD?

AV1 can cut bitrate noticeably, but encoding is slow and hardware decode is still uneven on older devices. Many services keep H.264 as the base and add HEVC or AV1 for devices that support them. Because older TVs and set-top boxes may lack AV1 decoding, a multi-codec ladder is safer than a single replacement.

How can recommendations be added to a small catalog?

Start with editorial rails, popularity and similar-title logic. Machine-learned models need viewing volume to beat these simple methods, so we add them when the data justifies the extra complexity. A smaller catalog can still feel personal when editors build good rails by hand, and that data later helps train models.
