Smart TV App Development

Speqto builds smart TV apps for streaming services, broadcasters, fitness, education and retail brands. This page compares the major television platforms, explains why TV performance and navigation need their own design thinking, and describes how we plan shared code, testing on real sets and store submission.

Three platforms, three technology stacks

Samsung Tizen and LG webOS apps are web applications, built with HTML, CSS and JavaScript and packaged for each store. Android TV and Google TV apps are native Android, written in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose for TV or Leanback. They share goals but not code. Tizen and webOS dominate in some countries and Android TV and Google TV in others, while Roku and Fire TV matter elsewhere, so market data should guide the launch order instead of a default list.

Framework choice affects reuse. A React or Lit based web client can serve Tizen, webOS and sometimes other browsers with platform adapters, while Android TV usually remains its own build. We decide where to share by looking at your catalog, DRM needs and team. Web engine age is the main hazard. Some televisions ship with browsers several years behind desktop Chrome, so we transpile, avoid unsupported CSS, polyfill carefully and run the app on the oldest model you agree to support.

Designing for ten feet and a remote

Viewers sit across the room with a directional pad. That means large type, generous focus states, predictable back behavior and no hover or touch assumptions. Spatial navigation libraries help, but focus traps and lost focus after a data refresh remain the most common defects. Input is more than arrows. Magic Remote pointers on LG, color buttons, number keys, voice search and media keys each need a defined behavior, and a single key map file keeps these differences out of feature code.

Hardware is another constraint. Older televisions have slow CPUs, limited memory and old web engines, so bundle size, image decoding, list virtualization and animation need discipline. We test on physical sets from several model years, since emulators hide the problems that reviewers and customers find. Memory pressure shows up as a crash after an hour of browsing. We cap image sizes, release off-screen rows, avoid heavy libraries and soak test with long sessions to find leaks before reviewers do.

Playback, DRM and store approval

Playback uses AVPlay on Tizen, native or MSE players on webOS, and ExoPlayer on Android TV. DRM support varies, typically Widevine and PlayReady, so content licenses should be mapped against each platform early. Ads, captions, audio tracks and resume behavior need device-specific handling. Advertising identifiers, consent prompts and limits on tracking differ by platform and by country, and ad SDKs must be validated on each target TV.

Each store has its own review rules for navigation, memory use, privacy, deep links and branding. We prepare submission packages, keep test accounts ready and plan for rework cycles. Integrating with your existing OTT backend means the apps stay thin and the same business rules apply everywhere. Releases are slower than the web. Store review adds delay, so we use remote configuration and feature flags, keep the packaged app thin, and have a rollback plan for the occasions when a bad build reaches viewers.

What we do

What our Smart TV App Development team delivers

Specific work we do for clients, with the senior people who do it.

  • Samsung Tizen apps

Web-based TV apps using Tizen Studio and AVPlay with device testing across model years. We build, sign and test Tizen packages with AVPlay, DRM and Samsung-specific key handling.

  • LG webOS apps

webOS TV apps with Magic Remote support, media playback and Content Store submission. The app supports Magic Remote pointer and key navigation, with playback and DRM tested on LG hardware.

  • Android TV and Google TV

Native Kotlin apps with Compose for TV, leanback patterns, voice search and home screen channels. We reuse existing Android code where sensible and follow TV conventions.

  • Shared TV client strategy

Common code approaches for web-based platforms with platform-specific adapters for playback and input. A common UI layer and adapters keep platform differences contained and make later platforms cheaper to add.

  • TV UX design

Focus models, rails, detail pages and settings built for remote navigation and readability at distance. Layouts are verified on real sets, not only in emulators.

  • Testing and store approval

Real-device test rounds, performance profiling and managed submission to each store. We keep a device matrix, record results for each release and prepare listings and assets for the stores.

Outcomes

What you can expect

Every engagement is tied to measurable business results, not just deliverables.

01

Reach on living-room screens

Your service appears on major television platforms without separate product thinking for each one. Customers use the television they already own.

02

Responsive on older sets

Performance work so the app remains usable on mid-range and older televisions. Older models stay usable for more of your audience.

03

Shared backend, fewer surprises

TV apps connect to the same APIs and entitlements as your mobile and web clients. One backend serves every client.

FAQ

Smart TV App Development FAQs

Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.

Which smart TV platforms should we launch on first?

Pick by your audience's devices. Android and Google TV, Samsung Tizen and LG webOS together cover many homes, while Roku, Fire TV and Apple TV matter in some markets. Regional device data should guide the order. Telemetry from your existing apps shows which devices your viewers own, and that data is a better guide than general market share.

Can one codebase serve Samsung and LG TVs?

Often yes for the interface, since both are web-based. Playback, key handling, DRM and packaging differ, so you need an adapter layer. Android TV is normally a separate native app. Teams often keep one design system and component library, then provide separate packaging and playback layers for each platform.

How long does smart TV app approval take?

Review times vary by store and by how clean your first submission is. Allow time for at least one round of feedback on navigation, performance or policy and keep it out of your critical launch path. Submissions are faster when reviewers have working test accounts, complete metadata and clear privacy documentation.

Do smart TV apps need DRM?

If you carry licensed premium content, almost certainly. Widevine and PlayReady cover most TVs, and the exact requirement comes from your license agreements. Free or user-generated content may need only token protection. Without DRM you can still protect content with signed URLs and short-lived tokens, though studios will usually insist on more.
