How software and AI improve movement
Route and dispatch optimization is a constraint problem: time windows, vehicle capacity, driver hours, skills and priorities. Solvers such as OR-Tools handle it well, and machine learning improves the inputs by predicting realistic service times and arrival estimates from historical trips, instead of trusting optimistic defaults that cause late deliveries. Good planning data also helps negotiate with carriers and customers, because performance claims can be backed by evidence instead of memory.
In warehouses, slotting, pick-path and labour planning reduce walking and congestion, while computer vision can read labels, count pallets and spot damage. Demand and capacity forecasting helps teams decide staffing and fleet size ahead of peaks. Language models help most with messy paperwork such as bills of lading, customs documents and carrier emails. Each model is judged against a plain baseline, such as last week's average, so the team knows whether the added complexity is truly earning its place.
