LMS and eLearning Development

LMS and eLearning development covers learning management systems that deliver courses, assess learners and report progress. Speqto builds and customizes Moodle and bespoke platforms for training companies, schools, corporate learning teams and edtech founders deciding between an existing LMS and a purpose-built product.

Moodle, packaged LMS or a custom platform

Moodle is open source, extensible and widely used, which makes it a sensible base for many schools and organizations. Packaged systems such as Canvas or Totara reduce operations work at license cost. A custom LMS makes sense when the learning experience is your product, with unusual pricing, cohorts, credentials or user journeys. Reporting needs and the sizes of cohorts should drive the decision.

We weigh required features against effort: enrolment rules, certificates, multi-tenant separation, mobile access, integration with HR or CRM. Often the best answer is Moodle plus custom plugins, which is cheaper than a ground-up build. A short discovery maps learner types, content formats, assessment rules and reporting duties. Corporate compliance training, university modules and paid consumer courses place very different demands on enrolment, certification and support, so the platform should be sized to the real audience.

Standards, content and assessment

Interoperability matters because content is expensive. We support SCORM and xAPI packages, LTI tools, and integration with video platforms such as Vimeo or Mux. Learners need accessible players, captions, resumable progress and mobile layouts that work on weak connections. Plugin choices follow Moodle's coding standards and upgrade path. Version control, automated tests and a staging site protect course delivery during upgrades. Backups, user-data exports and a recovery plan are agreed in advance, because a failure during an exam window is far more costly than a delayed feature.

Assessment features go beyond quizzes: question banks, randomisation, proctoring integrations, rubric grading, peer review and plagiarism checks. AI can draft question variants, summarize lessons or answer learner questions from course content, but instructors review generated material and it never replaces graded decision-making. Content authoring tools, video hosting and live classroom integrations are treated as separate decisions, because they affect cost and maintenance more than the LMS itself. Captions, transcripts and keyboard navigation support learners who need them.

Data, integrations and scale

A learning platform produces valuable data: completions, time on task, assessment results and drop-off points. We structure it for dashboards in Metabase or Power BI and for xAPI Learning Record Stores, and handle learner privacy under rules such as GDPR and FERPA by minimizing personal data and defining retention. Question analytics reveal poorly written items, which is where AI can assist reviewers.

Integrations connect single sign-on, payments, HR systems, CRM, video conferencing and certificate services. For exam seasons or enrolment peaks, we load-test, cache static content and separate heavy jobs such as report generation from user-facing traffic. Role design, instructor tooling and moderation matter as much as learner screens. We also plan notifications, mobile access and support routes, and run pilot courses with real learners before launch, adjusting from the feedback so rollout is smoother.

FAQ

LMS and eLearning Development FAQs

Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.

Should we use Moodle or build a custom LMS?

Use Moodle when standard course delivery fits and you can accept its structure. Build custom when the learning experience, pricing or user journey is your product and an LMS would constrain it. Both paths can be combined.

What are SCORM and xAPI?

SCORM is an older standard for packaging courses and reporting completion to an LMS. xAPI records richer learning activity to a Learning Record Store and works beyond the browser, including apps and simulations. Standards differ in scope.

Can AI be added to an LMS?

Yes, for drafting quiz questions, summarizing lessons, tutoring on course material and recommending content. Instructors should review generated content and graded decisions need transparent rules. Human review stays in place. Instructors keep final responsibility for review.

How do you handle learner data privacy?

We minimize personal data, apply role-based access, encrypt in transit and at rest, define retention periods and support regional requirements such as GDPR or FERPA, with legal advice on your obligations. Seek legal advice. Legal advice is recommended.
