A fragmented, operator-controlled platform
Unlike consumer streaming sticks, set-top boxes are supplied by an operator, so the platform varies: Android TV Operator Tier, Linux with browser runtimes, RDK, or older proprietary middleware. Each decides language, UI toolkit, memory and update process. Operators also care about total cost. A single application that can run on several box models reduces testing and support, but only if the abstraction between your UI and the hardware layer is designed carefully from the beginning.
Our first step is a platform audit covering the chipset, OS version, browser engine or SDK, available codecs and hardware decoders, and CPU and RAM limits. A design that ignores a box with minimal memory will not survive in the field, no matter how good it looks in a simulator. Navigation design relies on remote keys, color buttons and sometimes voice or numeric channel entry. Subscribers move between live channels constantly, so latency in the channel banner or guide feels worse here than in any on-demand app.
