What a progressive web app delivers

A PWA is a website with extra capabilities: a web app manifest for installation, a service worker for caching and offline behavior, HTTPS, and optional features such as push notifications and background sync. Users add it to the home screen without an app store. We build PWAs for field tools, catalogs, booking, internal systems, news and content apps, and e-commerce front ends where reach and speed matter more than deep hardware access.

The business case is reach and cost. One codebase serves every device, updates ship instantly without store review, and the install step disappears. This helps in markets with low-end devices or patchy networks, where a lightweight cached app outperforms a large download. It also lets you test an idea before funding separate native apps. Discovery still comes through search and links.

How we engineer a PWA

The service worker is the heart of it, and bad caching causes the worst bugs. We use Workbox to define strategies: cache-first for static assets, network-first for fresh data, stale-while-revalidate where slight staleness is acceptable. Offline writes are queued in IndexedDB and synchronized on reconnect, with conflict rules decided up front. Versioned updates prompt users rather than silently serving old code.

We build on React, Vue, Angular or Next.js with Vite plugins, then audit with Lighthouse and test on real mid-range phones with throttled networks. Performance budgets, image optimization and code splitting protect load time. Security basics include HTTPS everywhere, a strict Content Security Policy and careful handling of cached authenticated data on shared devices. We document the trade-off for your team so the decision can be revisited later with facts.

PWA, native app or responsive site

A PWA fits when search discovery, quick updates and one codebase matter. Native fits when you need advanced Bluetooth, background location, heavy graphics or the strongest store presence. A plain responsive site suffices when users visit once and need no offline mode. Weigh what the app must do after the first minute, not just how it looks on the home screen.

Platform support differs. Android Chrome offers the broadest PWA features. iOS Safari has improved, supporting installation and web push for installed apps, but storage limits and fewer background capabilities remain, so we test iOS behavior early. A Trusted Web Activity can place a PWA in Google Play. AI features such as assistant chat or smart search can be added through APIs, with attention to latency.

What is a progressive web app?

A website built with a manifest, a service worker and HTTPS so it can be installed, work offline and send notifications. It runs in the browser engine yet feels like an app, and it needs no app store listing to reach users.

PWA or native app: which should we build?

A PWA fits content, catalogs, booking and field tools where reach and quick updates matter. Native fits apps needing advanced hardware, background location or heavy graphics. Many teams start with a PWA and add native apps once demand is proven.

Do PWAs work on iPhones?

Yes, with limits. iOS supports adding PWAs to the home screen and web push for installed apps, but has stricter storage limits and fewer background features than Android. We test iOS behavior early and design around the gaps.

Can a PWA work fully offline?

It can, if designed for it. Static assets are cached, data is stored locally, and changes sync later. Real-time or server-dependent features cannot work offline, so we agree with you which actions must be available without a connection.
