About hiring Data engineers
Everything to know before you hire Data talent
Speqto supplies data engineers who move data from source systems into warehouses and lakes reliably, model it so people can use it, and keep pipelines observable. This page is for CTOs, analytics leads and ML teams who want to hire data engineers and need to understand the skills, vetting and working model.
Data engineering is mostly about trust. A dashboard number that differs between two reports destroys confidence faster than any outage. Strong engineers design ingestion with idempotent loads, schema change handling, late-arriving data and backfills, then test the outputs. They distinguish ELT into a warehouse from heavy transformation in Spark, and pick based on volume, latency and the skills of the team that will own it.
Modeling matters as much as plumbing. Expect fluency in dimensional modeling, slowly changing dimensions, medallion-style layers, data contracts with upstream teams and clear naming. An engineer who documents grain, owners and definitions for key metrics saves analysts months of arguments. We look for people who ask what decision a table supports before building it. That question shapes everything downstream. Clear ownership of each metric prevents most disputes.
Tools, batch, streaming and cost
The modern stack usually includes Airflow or Dagster for orchestration, dbt for transformations and tests, Fivetran or Airbyte for connectors, and a warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift or Databricks. For streaming, Kafka or Kinesis with Flink or Spark Structured Streaming handle events, and the engineer should know when real time is worth the complexity. Often hourly batch is enough.
Cost and performance need active management. Partitioning, clustering, incremental models, warehouse sizing and query patterns drive the bill, especially on consumption-priced platforms. Our engineers add data quality checks with Great Expectations or dbt tests, lineage and freshness alerts, and access controls for personal data. Data feeding machine learning needs reproducibility, so feature pipelines are versioned like code. Pipelines are tested the same way application code is.
Vetting and how engagements run
Candidates are assessed on SQL depth, Python, pipeline design, modeling and a practical task such as building a small incremental pipeline with tests. We also review how they handle failures and communicate with analysts and product teams, since data engineers sit between many groups. Profiles reach you in about two business days, ready for your own interview. We also read their code samples for clarity, since someone else will maintain it.
You can hire one engineer to extend your team, a small pod with an analytics engineer and QA, or a team to build a platform from scratch. Work uses your cloud accounts and repositories, with weekly demos, full IP assignment, NDAs on request and 30 days notice to scale. AI-assisted coding speeds up boilerplate and documentation, while reviewers check every transformation.
Why teams hire from Speqto
A bench, not a single freelancer
If an engineer is unavailable or the fit is wrong, a replacement comes from the same bench, with knowledge handed over.
Batch and incremental pipelines with retries, idempotent loads, backfill support and monitoring across your source systems and APIs.
Warehouse and lakehouse builds
Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift or Databricks environments with layered models, access control and sensible partitioning from the start. Environments are separated for development and production.
dbt and analytics engineering
Tested, documented dbt projects with clear metric definitions, so analysts query consistent tables instead of rebuilding logic. Includes tests, docs and lineage graphs.
Streaming data platforms
Kafka or Kinesis ingestion with Flink or Spark processing for use cases that really need low latency, like fraud signals or telemetry.
Data quality and observability
Freshness, volume and schema checks with alerting and lineage, so broken data is caught before it reaches a dashboard.
Data platform migration
Moving from legacy ETL tools or on-premises databases to a modern cloud stack, with parallel runs and reconciliation.

How to hire
Hire Data talent in four steps
A short, low-risk path from your brief to a working engineer. If the first engineer is not right, we replace them.
1
Share your brief
Tell us the role, stack, hours overlap and how long you need the engineer. A 20-minute call is usually enough.
2
Get vetted profiles
In about two business days you receive candidates with assessment notes, code samples and availability.
3
Interview and trial
Speak to the engineers yourself. Start with a short paid trial and continue only if the fit is right.
4
Onboard and ship
Your engineer joins stand-ups and repositories, demos weekly and is backed by a delivery lead.
Included

FAQ
Hire Data Engineers FAQs
Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.
What is the difference between a data engineer and a data scientist?
Data engineers build and maintain the pipelines, storage and models that make data reliable. Data scientists analyze that data and build statistical or machine learning models. Without the first, the second spends most of the time cleaning data.
Do we need streaming, or is batch enough?
Most reporting and analytics works fine with hourly or daily batch loads. Streaming earns its complexity for fraud detection, live operations, personalization or telemetry. A good data engineer will start with the latency the decision truly needs.
Which data warehouse should we choose?
It depends on your cloud, team skills, data volume and pricing model. Snowflake and BigQuery are popular managed choices, Databricks suits heavy Spark and ML use, and Redshift fits AWS-centred teams. We compare options against your workload before recommending.
Can your data engineers help with data governance and privacy?
Yes. They implement role-based access, column masking, retention rules and audit logs, and design pipelines that handle personal data carefully under rules such as GDPR. Legal interpretation stays with your counsel, and we build the controls.
