Mobile App Testing

Mobile app testing is harder than web testing because of device variety, operating system versions, flaky networks and store review rules. Speqto tests native, Flutter and React Native apps on real devices and emulators, and helps product teams ship releases that survive both users and app store review.

Building a device and OS matrix

Testing every phone is impossible, so we build a matrix from your analytics: the most-used devices, the oldest OS you support, small and large screens, foldables if relevant and a couple of low-memory handsets that expose slow rendering. Android fragmentation gets more attention, with different manufacturers' battery and permission behavior. We also record which handsets crash or lag most in your production analytics, and re-weight the matrix each quarter.

Real devices, in-house or through a cloud such as BrowserStack or Firebase Test Lab, are used for anything touching camera, biometrics, push, Bluetooth, GPS or performance. Emulators and simulators handle quick functional runs, where fidelity matters less. We also include the first-run experience, onboarding screens and permission prompts, since a user who denies location or notifications once may never change the setting again.

What we check beyond functionality

Mobile apps fail in situations desktop software never meets: a call arrives mid-payment, the user switches to airplane mode, permissions are denied, storage is full, or the app is killed in the background and restored. We test these interruptions deliberately, along with upgrade paths from older app versions and data migrations. Real devices, in-house or through a cloud such as BrowserStack or Firebase Test Lab, are used for anything touching camera, biometrics, push, Bluetooth, GPS or performance, where fidelity matters most.

Performance testing covers cold start time, frame drops, memory growth, battery drain and network payload. Usability and accessibility checks look at touch targets, dynamic text sizes, VoiceOver and TalkBack, and right-to-left layouts. We test these interruptions deliberately, along with upgrade paths from older app versions, local database migrations, expired sessions and the difference between a fresh install and an update.

Store readiness and release testing

Apple and Google reject apps for reasons that functional testing misses: missing privacy disclosures, unexplained permission prompts, broken sign-in for reviewers, crashes on the review device or misuse of payment APIs. We run a pre-submission checklist against current guidelines for both stores. Usability and accessibility checks look at touch targets, dynamic text sizes, VoiceOver and TalkBack, right-to-left layouts, and whether the main flow works one-handed on a large screen.

We also test staged rollouts, internal test tracks and TestFlight builds, crash reporting through Firebase Crashlytics or Sentry, and the rollback or remote config plan. A bad release should be contained to a small share of users within minutes, and the team should know in advance who decides to halt a rollout and how. Each of these checks is rehearsed before launch day.

What we do

What our Mobile App Testing team delivers

Specific work we do for clients, with the senior people who do it.

  • Functional testing

Verification of flows, forms, offline behavior, permissions and integrations on iOS and Android, including upgrade paths from earlier versions.

  • Device and OS coverage

A defined matrix of real devices and OS versions drawn from your user analytics, run through cloud labs or physical devices.

  • Mobile automation

Appium, Espresso, XCUITest or Maestro suites for critical journeys, running on real-device clouds as part of your release pipeline.

  • Performance profiling

Measurement of start time, rendering, memory, battery and data usage using Xcode Instruments and Android Profiler on representative low-end hardware.

  • Network condition testing

Checks under slow, lossy and switching connections, with proxy tools to simulate timeouts, retries and unreachable backends and different handset hardware..

  • App store readiness review

A review against Apple App Store and Google Play policies covering privacy labels, permissions, payments, content and reviewer access.

Outcomes

What you can expect

Every engagement is tied to measurable business results, not just deliverables.

01

Fewer crashes after release

Interruption, upgrade and low-end device testing exposes crashes that normally appear only in reviews and support tickets.

02

Smoother store approvals

Pre-submission checks cut the risk of rejection for policy issues, so launch dates are not lost to resubmission cycles.

03

Confidence on every device

Users on older phones and slower networks get a usable app, which protects ratings and retention.

FAQ

Mobile App Testing FAQs

Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.

How many devices do we need to test on?

Fewer than people expect. We use your analytics to select the handful of devices and OS versions covering most users, then add a low-end Android device and an older iPhone. Cloud device farms fill gaps without buying hardware. We also keep the matrix updated each quarter.

Do you test React Native and Flutter apps?

Yes. We test the app as users experience it on each platform, and add framework-specific checks such as bridge or platform channel behavior, plugin compatibility and performance of animations and lists. Native modules deserve extra attention in both frameworks. Plugin versions deserve particular attention in both.

Can you test apps before they are on the app stores?

Yes. We work with TestFlight, Play internal testing and signed builds from your pipeline. Pre-launch we also run a store readiness review so policy problems are fixed before submission. Release candidates can be uploaded straight from your CI.

How is mobile app testing different from web testing?

Mobile adds interruptions, permissions, background behavior, device sensors, battery, variable networks and store rules. Version fragmentation is also larger, because users keep old app and OS versions for a long time. Sensors, battery and store review rules make mobile quite different.
