Keeping a ServiceNow instance upgradable
The most common ServiceNow regret is heavy customization of baseline tables and scripts, which makes every family upgrade painful. We prefer configuration over code, build new functionality in scoped applications, and avoid editing out-of-the-box records unless there is no alternative. Update sets or source control through the Application Repository keep changes traceable. Process owners sign off the target model before configuration begins, which avoids rework.
Before building, we map your process against what the Now Platform already provides in Incident, Problem, Change and Request Management. Aligning to the baseline process model saves effort and makes later features, including newer AI capabilities, easier to adopt. Naming conventions, domain separation where needed and clear update-set discipline keep multi-developer teams from overwriting each other. We document every deliberate departure from the baseline, including the reason and the person who approved it, so the next upgrade review is quick.
