Fit check
Is CTO as a Service right for you?
An honest view. If another model suits you better, we will tell you on the first call.
A good fit when
You face a technology decision with real money behind it
You lack senior technical leadership in-house
You want an independent view of architecture, cost or vendors
You need a plan your board and engineers can both follow
Think twice when
You already have a settled plan and only need hands
You want slide decks without follow-through
The decision has already been made elsewhere
There is no sponsor to act on recommendations
About CTO as a Service
How CTO as a Service works in practice
CTO as a service gives a startup or growing business part-time technical leadership: someone who owns architecture decisions, hiring standards, vendor choices and delivery discipline without the cost of a full-time executive. This page explains what a fractional CTO does, when it works, and when you genuinely need someone full time.
What a fractional CTO is responsible for
The role is judgment more than hours. A fractional CTO decides the shape of the system, which parts to buy and which to build, how the team is organized and what technical debt is acceptable this quarter. They translate between founders and engineers, so business goals become a plan that engineers can estimate and non-technical directors can follow. They also say no, which is half the value.
Typical tasks include writing the technical strategy, reviewing the codebase, setting up code review and release practice, interviewing engineering candidates, choosing and managing development vendors, and preparing technical answers for investors. For a founder who is not technical, simply having a trusted person to challenge a vendor's estimate can save months. In board and investor settings, a technical leader who can explain risks plainly, without hiding behind jargon, also makes it easier for non-technical directors to support the right investments.
How the engagement runs
We usually start with a two-week assessment: repository and infrastructure review, interviews with the team, a look at costs, security basics and the roadmap. The result is a short written plan with priorities, risks and a proposed operating rhythm. From there the CTO commits regular days each week, attends leadership meetings and is reachable for urgent decisions. The plan is yours to keep, whatever you decide next.
Because Speqto is an engineering company, the CTO can draw on delivery capacity when you need it: a dedicated team, a product pod or a quick prototype to test an assumption. That is optional. If you prefer another vendor, we will still advise, and we declare any conflict of interest openly when a recommendation touches our own services. Where AI features are on the roadmap, the CTO also helps you judge which problems suit hosted models, which need custom work and which are better solved with ordinary software.
When fractional leadership is not enough
A part-time leader suits companies with a small team, a product that is early or stable, and no urgent need for someone to manage a large engineering organization every day. It strains when you have many teams, heavy regulatory exposure, frequent production incidents or a board expecting a full-time executive. Honest advice here matters, and we will tell you when your stage has outgrown a part-time arrangement, even though that ends the engagement sooner than either side might like.
Treat fractional leadership as a bridge as well as a service. A good engagement ends with a hiring profile for your permanent CTO, a documented architecture, onboarding material and the processes the successor will inherit. If you do hire a full-time CTO, the fractional leader can stay briefly to support the handover, then step back. Start the search early, since senior engineering leaders often take months to hire, and use the written architecture and roadmap as the basis for the job description and the first ninety days.
What is included
What you get from the first week
Technology assessment
A two-week review of code, infrastructure, security basics, team and costs, ending with a written plan and ranked risks.
Architecture and roadmap ownership
Decisions about system design, build versus buy and sequencing, documented so the team understands the reasoning and can challenge it.
Engineering hiring support
Role definitions, interview loops, technical assessments and candidate evaluation, so your first engineering hires raise the bar rather than lower it.
Vendor and agency oversight
Review of estimates, contracts, code quality and delivery reports from any development partner, whether or not Speqto is involved.
Investor and due diligence support
Clear technical narratives, architecture diagrams and risk answers prepared for investors, acquirers or enterprise customers who are reviewing your platform in detail.
Leadership succession plan
A profile, documentation and transition plan for a future full-time CTO, so knowledge does not leave with the fractional leader.

FAQ
CTO as a Service FAQs
Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.
They own the technical direction part time: architecture, build-versus-buy choices, hiring standards, vendor oversight, security basics and the roadmap. They also act as a translator between founders, investors and engineers, which is especially valuable for non-technical founders.
How many days a week does a fractional CTO work?
It varies with stage and urgency. Early on it might be a couple of days a week plus availability for urgent calls; later it often drops to a few days a month. We set the rhythm in the plan after the initial assessment.
Can a CTO as a service replace a full-time CTO permanently?
For a small, stable team it can, for a long time. Once you have several teams, regulatory demands or a daily need for people leadership, a full-time executive becomes sensible. A good fractional engagement prepares for that moment.
Will you push us to use Speqto for development?
No. You can use any vendor or your own team. If a recommendation involves Speqto's services, we say so clearly, show alternatives and let you decide, because trust in the advice is the whole value of the role.
