Anatomy of a good pipeline
A useful pipeline answers one question quickly: is this change safe to merge and release? Stages typically include linting, compilation, unit tests, integration tests, packaging into versioned artifacts, security scans and deployment. Order matters, with cheap, fast checks first so developers learn about simple mistakes within minutes instead of waiting for a long suite. Monorepos need path-based triggers and affected-project detection so that a small change does not rebuild everything in the company.
We aim for pull request builds that finish in about ten minutes, using caching, parallel jobs, test splitting, incremental builds and ephemeral runners. Slow pipelines teach people to batch changes and skip checks, so build speed is treated as a product quality in its own right. Flaky tests are tracked and quarantined with an owner, because a pipeline that fails randomly erodes trust faster than almost anything else.
