What the Model Context Protocol does for you
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that describes how an AI application discovers and calls external capabilities. An MCP server publishes tools, readable resources and prompt templates, and any compatible client, such as an IDE assistant, a desktop chat app or your own agent, can use them without a custom connector for each pairing. Anthropic introduced the protocol, but it is open and now supported across many vendors and tools.
The practical benefit is reuse. One well-built server for your ticketing system, data warehouse or internal API can serve several assistants and models today and whichever you adopt next year. That replaces a tangle of one-off plugins with a single maintained interface that security teams can actually review. Tool names and parameters are written for a model reader, with examples and clear boundaries, which improves selection noticeably.
