About hiring Android engineers
Everything to know before you hire Android talent
Hire Android developers who build apps that behave on the messy reality of Android: thousands of device models, different OS versions, aggressive battery management and patchy networks. Speqto engineers work in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and handle architecture, testing and Play Store releases for founders and product teams shipping to real users.
Android differs from other mobile platforms mostly in its variety. Screen sizes, manufacturers' battery rules, permission changes between OS versions and background execution limits all affect how a feature behaves. A developer who tests only on a flagship phone ships bugs that appear on the mid-range devices many of your customers actually own. Testing on real, modest hardware early is one of the cheapest ways to protect ratings.
Modern Android is a good platform to work on. Kotlin coroutines and Flow handle asynchronous work cleanly, Jetpack Compose speeds up interface building, and Hilt, Room and WorkManager give consistent answers for injection, storage and background jobs. Strong developers use these tools deliberately and keep business logic out of screens. Developers who keep screens thin and move logic into testable layers also find it easier to adopt new Android releases and Compose features gradually.
How we vet Android developers
We test Kotlin depth first: coroutines, structured concurrency, Flow, null safety and sealed classes. Then Android specifics, including the activity and process lifecycle, state restoration after process death, Compose recomposition, navigation, permissions and background work limits. Candidates design a small offline-first feature and explain how it syncs when connectivity returns. We also ask how candidates would handle a crash reported by only a few users on one manufacturer's phones, since that scenario is routine on Android and needs methodical diagnosis.
We also look at engineering habits that protect your releases. These include modular architecture, unit and UI tests with Espresso or Compose testing, crash reporting with Firebase Crashlytics, startup and memory profiling, ProGuard or R8 configuration, signing, and staged rollouts through the Google Play Console. Familiarity with Play policy topics, such as data safety declarations, permission justification and subscription rules, helps avoid rejections and delays at launch.
How the engagement works
Tell us about your app, target devices and release plan, and we will share relevant profiles within about two business days. Developers join your repositories and tracker, and share installable builds in weekly demos so you can try the app on your own phone. The first weeks usually cover environment setup, a review of the architecture and a small production release, giving you early proof of quality and pace.
Start with one developer or build a mobile squad with QA and design support. Scaling needs 30 days notice. We sign NDAs on request and assign all code and IP to you, including signing keys held in your accounts. AI assistants help with boilerplate and tests, with human review of each change. Your Google Play developer account and signing keys should remain under your company's control throughout, which protects the app if vendors change.
Why teams hire from Speqto
A bench, not a single freelancer
If an engineer is unavailable or the fit is wrong, a replacement comes from the same bench, with knowledge handed over.
Kotlin apps using Jetpack Compose, clean architecture and dependency injection, designed to stay maintainable as features and team size increase.
Offline-first features
Local storage with Room and background sync with WorkManager, so apps remain useful in poor connectivity and resolve conflicts sensibly.
Payments and device features
Google Play Billing, camera, location, biometrics, push notifications and Bluetooth, implemented with correct permissions and graceful failure. Failures are handled without crashing.
Device and OS testing
Test plans covering low-end hardware, multiple OS versions and screen sizes, using Firebase Test Lab and real devices where it matters.
Play Store release management
Signing, app bundles, staged rollouts, store listing requirements, policy compliance and crash monitoring after each release. Rollouts are staged and monitored.
Java to Kotlin migration
Gradual conversion of legacy Java apps and View-based screens to Kotlin and Compose, protected by tests, without pausing new features.

How we vet
Five filters before you see a profile
You only interview engineers who have already cleared code review, a live problem-solving session and a communication check.

How to hire
Hire Android talent in four steps
A short, low-risk path from your brief to a working engineer. If the first engineer is not right, we replace them.
1
Share your brief
Tell us the role, stack, hours overlap and how long you need the engineer. A 20-minute call is usually enough.
2
Get vetted profiles
In about two business days you receive candidates with assessment notes, code samples and availability.
3
Interview and trial
Speak to the engineers yourself. Start with a short paid trial and continue only if the fit is right.
4
Onboard and ship
Your engineer joins stand-ups and repositories, demos weekly and is backed by a delivery lead.
Included

FAQ
Hire Android Developers FAQs
Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.
Should we build native Android or use a cross-platform framework?
Go native when you need deep device features, top performance or Android-specific design. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter or React Native suit teams wanting one codebase for iOS and Android. We recommend after reviewing your features and roadmap.
Do you still support Java-based Android code?
Yes. Many existing apps contain Java, and our developers can maintain it. For new work we recommend Kotlin, and we migrate older code gradually where it reduces risk and speeds up development. Gradual conversion is usually safer than rewriting.
How do you handle Android fragmentation?
By supporting a minimum OS version based on your analytics, testing on representative low, mid and high-end devices, using Jetpack libraries that smooth over differences, and monitoring crashes by device and OS after release. Analytics guide each support decision.
Can you publish the app to Google Play for us?
We can prepare the build, listing, data safety form and rollout plan. The developer account and signing keys should belong to your company, which protects you if vendors change. Keys should never live on a developer laptop.
