OTT Platform Development

Speqto builds OTT platforms for broadcasters, creators, sports bodies and niche-content startups that want to own the viewer relationship instead of renting it from a marketplace. This page covers the pieces that make or break a launch: business model, backend, device apps, protection, billing and the data layer.

Pick the business model before the architecture

Subscription, ad-supported, transactional and hybrid models pull the architecture in different directions. SVOD needs entitlement rules, trials, coupons and churn recovery. AVOD needs server-side ad insertion, ad pod logic and reporting that advertisers will accept. TVOD needs rental windows and per-title pricing. Getting this wrong is expensive, because pricing pages, billing tables and app store rules all grow around the first model you pick. We run a short workshop with commercial and product leads to rank the models against your content rights and target audience.

Many teams start with one model and add another later, so we design the entitlement service as its own component. Adding a free tier with ads, or a pay-per-view event, then becomes a configuration change rather than a rewrite of playback and billing. We also list the events the entitlement service must emit, such as trial started or payment failed, for shared reporting.

How an OTT stack fits together

A typical build has an ingest and transcoding layer, packaging into HLS and DASH, a CDN, a content management layer, a user and entitlement service, and client apps for web, mobile and connected TV. Metadata, artwork, subtitles and audio tracks are first-class concerns, not afterthoughts. Clear ownership of each layer also helps your procurement review, since you can see which parts are vendor contracts, which are open source and which are code you will own outright after delivery.

We decide early where to buy and where to build. Managed services such as AWS Elemental MediaConvert, Mux or Bitmovin cut time to market, while open tools such as FFmpeg and Shaka Packager reduce per-minute cost at volume. The right mix depends on library size, viewing hours and team skills. Where a licensor demands specific hardware security levels, for example Widevine L1 for high resolution, we capture that in the requirements so the device list and the resolution ladder are honest about what each screen can show.

Protection, devices and data

Premium content usually requires multi-DRM: Widevine for Android and Chrome, FairPlay for Apple devices and PlayReady for Windows and many smart TVs. License servers, token auth and concurrency limits need to be designed together so one household cannot share an account with fifty people. Anti-piracy is a layered job rather than a single switch. Forensic watermarking, geo-blocking, device registration and takedown monitoring may be required by rights holders, and each has a cost that should appear in your plan.

Device reach is the other big cost driver. Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Tizen and webOS each have their own certification and remote-control rules. We use AI-assisted tooling for test generation and QA triage, and build analytics for watch time, drop-off and cohort retention from day one. Retention work lives in the product as well as marketing: continue-watching rows, profile-level recommendations, download-for-offline and win-back offers triggered by lapsed viewing are all built on the same event data.

What we do

What our OTT Platform Development team delivers

Specific work we do for clients, with the senior people who do it.

  • OTT product strategy

Business model selection, content rights mapping, device priorities and a phased roadmap so the first release is small enough to ship and sell.

  • Backend and CMS

Catalog, metadata, entitlement, user profiles and editorial tools built on APIs that every client app consumes consistently. Editors schedule and geo-restrict titles themselves.

  • Multi-device apps

Native and cross-platform clients for iOS, Android, web, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV and Samsung and LG televisions.

  • Billing and payments

Stripe, Razorpay, app store billing and carrier options, with trials, dunning, coupons and regional pricing handled in one place.

  • Content protection

Multi-DRM, signed URLs, watermarking options and concurrency controls matched to what your licensors actually require. Residual risks are documented honestly for licensors and your security reviewer.

  • Analytics and personalization

Playback quality metrics, retention cohorts and recommendation features that raise watch time without hiding your catalog. Everything runs from one event stream.

FAQ

OTT Platform Development FAQs

Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.

How long does it take to build an OTT platform?

It depends on scope. A web and mobile MVP with a CMS, billing and DRM is a matter of months, while full connected TV coverage adds device certification time. We scope a first release that proves demand, then extend. We also share a simple cost model for transcoding, storage and CDN egress so the running cost is visible before you commit.

Should we build our own OTT platform or use a white-label product?

White-label suits quick tests and standard catalogs. Custom makes sense when you need unusual business rules, tight brand control, your own data, or lower costs at high viewing volume. We can help you compare both honestly. Hybrid designs are possible, using a white-label player or encoder while building the parts that differentiate you, and we outline that route if it fits.

Which DRM do we need for an OTT app?

If you stream studio or sports content, expect to need Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady together. Independent creators sometimes get by with token-protected HLS. Your licensing contracts decide the minimum, so check them before design. Key systems and device lists normally come from your studio or sports licenses, so ask for those documents early in planning.

Can you take over an existing OTT platform?

Yes. We start with an audit of architecture, playback errors, costs and app store status, then fix the highest-risk issues first. NDAs are available on request and all work is under full IP assignment to you. We take over code or accounts under a short audit, and we can hand over documentation and runbooks as the work completes.
