About hiring Laravel engineers
Everything to know before you hire Laravel talent
Speqto provides Laravel developers who build APIs, background processing and admin-heavy applications, write reusable packages and upgrade aging codebases safely. This page is for founders, agencies and product teams who want to hire Laravel developers and need to know what strong Laravel work looks like beyond tutorials.
Laravel makes it fast to get something working, which is exactly why quality varies so much. A strong developer keeps controllers thin, moves business rules into actions or services, uses form requests for validation, policies for authorization and API resources for response shaping. They understand Eloquent deeply enough to avoid N+1 queries, use eager loading and query scopes, and drop to the query builder or raw SQL when the ORM stops helping.
Testing separates professional work from prototypes. Expect Pest or PHPUnit feature tests, factories, database transactions in tests, and static analysis with Larastan or PHPStan. Code style tools like Pint keep reviews focused on logic. Developers should also be comfortable with modern PHP: typed properties, enums, readonly classes and attributes, since Laravel versions now require recent PHP releases. Those habits keep estimates honest.
Queues, APIs, packages and the wider ecosystem
Real applications push slow work off the request cycle. Laravel Horizon with Redis, queued jobs, batches, rate limiting, scheduled tasks and event listeners handle emails, imports, payments and reports. Developers need to plan retries, idempotency and failed job handling so a duplicate webhook does not charge a customer twice. Octane can improve throughput where profiling shows a genuine need. Failed jobs are alerted on, not discovered by customers.
API work uses Sanctum or Passport for authentication, versioned routes, consistent error formats and OpenAPI documentation. For interfaces, teams choose between Livewire, Inertia with Vue or React, or a separate front end. Filament speeds up admin panels, and Cashier handles subscriptions. Packages are powerful but add risk, so a good developer audits maintenance status, and writes small internal packages when reuse justifies it.
Upgrades, vetting and engagement
Many clients arrive with Laravel 5, 6 or 8 codebases running on end-of-life PHP. Upgrading is a staged job: raise test coverage around critical flows, update PHP and dependencies step by step, use Rector and Laravel Shift style tooling carefully, and deploy behind feature flags where possible. We estimate upgrades after inspecting the code, not before. Rollback plans are tested before the real deployment.
Candidates are assessed on a hands-on Laravel exercise, SQL and Eloquent performance questions, security awareness covering mass assignment, authorization and file uploads, and code review skills. You see profiles in about two business days. Engagements run as single developers or pods with QA and front-end support, with weekly demos, full IP assignment, NDAs on request and 30 days notice to scale.
Why teams hire from Speqto
A bench, not a single freelancer
If an engineer is unavailable or the fit is wrong, a replacement comes from the same bench, with knowledge handed over.
New builds with clean architecture, typed PHP, feature tests, queues and deployment pipelines suited to products and internal systems.
API development
Sanctum or Passport secured REST APIs with versioning, resources, rate limits and OpenAPI documentation for mobile and partner clients.
Queues and background processing
Horizon, Redis and batch jobs for imports, notifications, billing and reports, with retry, idempotency and failure handling. Includes job monitoring.
Package and module development
Reusable internal Laravel packages and integrations, tested and versioned, for teams that maintain several related applications. Includes semantic versioning.
Version upgrades and rescue
Staged upgrades of old Laravel and PHP versions, with tests added first, plus clean-up of slow queries and fragile code.
Admin panels and portals
Filament, Livewire or Inertia based back offices and customer portals with roles, audit logs, exports and clean interfaces.

How to hire
Hire Laravel talent in four steps
A short, low-risk path from your brief to a working engineer. If the first engineer is not right, we replace them.
1
Share your brief
Tell us the role, stack, hours overlap and how long you need the engineer. A 20-minute call is usually enough.
2
Get vetted profiles
In about two business days you receive candidates with assessment notes, code samples and availability.
3
Interview and trial
Speak to the engineers yourself. Start with a short paid trial and continue only if the fit is right.
4
Onboard and ship
Your engineer joins stand-ups and repositories, demos weekly and is backed by a delivery lead.

FAQ
Hire Laravel Developers FAQs
Straight answers on cost, timelines, IP ownership, team setup and how we work. Cannot find yours? Ask a solutions architect directly.
What should I look for when I hire Laravel developers?
Look for tested, structured code, solid Eloquent and SQL skills, queue experience and security awareness. Ask for an example of a performance problem they diagnosed. Experience with upgrades and package selection is a good sign of maturity.
Is Laravel suitable for large applications?
Yes, with discipline. Clear module boundaries, queues, caching, database indexing and good tests let Laravel applications grow large. Problems usually come from poor structure and untested shortcuts, which a senior developer will prevent. Observability helps there too.
Can you upgrade our old Laravel application?
Yes. We inspect the code, add tests around critical flows, update PHP and dependencies in steps, and deploy gradually. Very old projects may need replacement of abandoned packages, which we flag before committing to a timeline.
Should we use Livewire, Inertia or a separate front end?
Livewire suits teams who prefer to stay in PHP and build forms and dashboards quickly. Inertia works well with Vue or React inside one codebase. A separate front end makes sense for multiple clients, such as web and mobile, sharing one API.
