Where automation and AI pay off
Document-heavy steps are the best candidates. Intake of first notice of loss, medical reports, repair estimates and policy schedules can be handled by OCR and language models, with confidence scores that route uncertain cases to people. Straight-through processing for simple claims frees adjusters to focus on complex or sensitive ones. Models should earn trust gradually, starting in suggestion mode alongside existing decisions before being allowed to automate anything at all.
In underwriting, rules engines combine with models that enrich submissions from external data, flag missing information and suggest pricing. Fraud analytics use graph relationships between claimants, providers and addresses. Every automated recommendation should record why it was made, because underwriters, auditors and regulators will eventually ask for the reasoning. That traceability protects the business when a customer disputes a decision months after it was made.
