Generative AI for Fintech: Use Cases That Are Live in Production Today

Every fintech conference in 2023 was full of generative AI roadmaps. By 2025, the conversation has shifted. Decision-makers at banks, NBFCs, and insurance companies aren’t asking “should we pilot this?” anymore — they’re asking “why is our competitor’s claims process 40% faster than ours?” That’s because generative AI has quietly moved from sandbox demos to production systems handling real money, real compliance checks, and real customer conversations.

At Speqto Technologies, we’ve built and shipped several of these systems for BFSI clients over the past 18 months. This post isn’t a wishlist of “future possibilities” — it’s a rundown of what’s actually running in production today, with the honest caveats that come with it.

1. Document-heavy KYC and loan underwriting

KYC and loan processing generate mountains of unstructured documents — bank statements, salary slips, GST filings, utility bills used as address proof. We worked with a mid-sized NBFC lending partner whose underwriting team was manually extracting data from six to eight document types per application. We built an LLM-based extraction pipeline that reads scanned PDFs and images, normalizes inconsistent formats, flags mismatches (like a name spelling difference between Aadhaar and PAN), and pushes structured JSON straight into their LOS.

Turnaround for document review dropped from roughly 25 minutes to under 4 minutes per file. The important detail: we didn’t let the model make the final approve/reject call. It drafts a recommendation with a confidence score, and anything below a threshold routes to a human underwriter. That hybrid design is what got it past the client’s risk team.

2. Customer support copilots, not chatbots

Most “AI chatbot” projects in BFSI failed in 2020-2022 because they tried to replace the human entirely. What’s working now is different: a copilot sitting beside the support agent, not in front of the customer. For a digital insurance client, we deployed a system that listens to (or reads) the customer query, pulls relevant policy clauses, past claim history, and FAQ content, and drafts a response the agent edits before sending.

Average handling time dropped by about 30%, and — this mattered more to the client — new agents reached proficiency in half the usual onboarding time because the copilot effectively trains them on the job.

3. Collections and payment reminder personalization

Generic SMS reminders (“Your EMI is due”) have poor response rates. We helped a lending fintech generate personalized, tone-adjusted collection messages at scale — factoring in payment history, risk segment, and preferred language — while keeping every message compliant with RBI’s fair practices code for collections. A human compliance reviewer approves message templates per segment; the LLM only varies personalization within approved boundaries. This isn’t the model “freelancing” with customers — it’s constrained generation, which is the only way compliance teams sign off on this in regulated lending.

4. AML and transaction monitoring narrative writing

This one surprises people. AML analysts don’t just flag suspicious transactions — they write Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), which are dense, formulaic, and time-consuming. We built a tool for a banking client that takes the transaction graph and analyst’s bullet-point notes and drafts a full narrative report matching the regulator’s expected format. Analysts went from spending 45-60 minutes per report to about 15 minutes of review and edits. The analyst remains the one who certifies and files it — the model just removes the blank-page problem.

5. Internal code and documentation assistance for core banking teams

Less customer-facing, but very real: engineering teams working on legacy core banking systems (often COBOL or old Java monoliths) use LLM-based assistants to explain undocumented code, write test cases, and draft API documentation. One of our clients cut the time to onboard a new backend engineer onto their core lending module from six weeks to about three, mostly because the assistant could explain “what does this function actually do” faster than digging through tribal knowledge.

6. Synthetic data for fraud model testing

Fraud teams can’t easily share real transaction data for testing new detection models due to privacy constraints. Generative models trained to mimic the statistical properties of real transaction data (without memorizing actual records) let teams stress-test fraud rules against realistic edge cases — unusual geographies, rapid micro-transactions, device-switching patterns — before a model ever touches production traffic.

What’s common across all of these

  • None of them let the model make unsupervised financial decisions — there’s always a human checkpoint where regulation or risk demands it.
  • Every deployment started narrow (one document type, one customer segment, one report format) before scaling.
  • The ROI wasn’t “cost savings” in the pitch deck sense — it was measurable cycle-time reduction that compliance and risk teams could audit.

If you’re evaluating where generative AI fits into your fintech stack, the honest advice is: don’t start with the flashiest use case. Start with the workflow your team complains about most — document review, report writing, repetitive customer queries — and build a tightly scoped pilot around it. That’s where production-ready generative AI actually lives today, and that’s where we at Speqto Technologies have seen it earn its keep.
